Can my dental implants be fixed or repaired?

By far most dental implant patients have little to no problem with their dental implants, but a small percentage of dental implants do fail either soon after the procedure, or on down the road.

An artificial tooth attached to a metal post placed into the jaw bone, a dental implant can last for years, but such is not always the case. If you have an implant bothering you right now, or are worried it might be headed that way, here’s what you need to know to avoid and/or fix complications and even an outright failure of the dental implant.

There are a number of different ways in which dental implants may be impacted, including:

  • Gum Disease
  • Smoking Tobacco
  • Insufficient Jaw Bone
  • Medical Conditions (for example, arthritis and diabetes)
  • Poor Dental Hygiene

Dental implants are an excellent solution for lost teeth.

How Do We Diagnose Issues With Dental Implants?

Your Waterville family and general dentist will usually start by discussing the issue you’re having, then take dental x-rays for help in diagnosing the cause of the discomfort and the extent of the problem.

Your medical history may also impact the success or failure of dental implants, and also certain medications. When first considering a dental implant, it’s important to make sure your specific situation is suited to one or more dental implants.

Otherwise, poor planning and less skilled performance of the procedure can lead to a non-balanced situation that puts stress on key points of your bite. This can lead to the collection of bacteria, and on to infections and/or an abscess.

Some patients may need a sinus lift before receiving a dental implant. It helps to ensure success as it could interfere with the implant. Here at Waterville Family Dentistry, we take every possible precaution to make sure your dental implants are a success, and the same goes with fixing problem implants that are causing you pain.
